Becoming an Expat in Spain: Volume 8

Obtaining an NIE number

If you are considering a move to Spain then the first thing you need to do is get an NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero )

You need this number to do absolutely anything from opening a bank account to buying a property.

To get an NIE number you will need the following:

  1. The official NIE application form – see here: EX-15 application form (bear in mind this will need to be completed in Spanish) and the 012 form;

  2. Two passport photos;

  3. A document certifying the reason you are applying for an NIE;

  4. Proof of your address;

  5. Your passport together with a photocopy/scan of each of the passport pages;

  6. Power of Attorney if a representative is applying on your behalf;

  7.  Payment of the administration fee.

The application process can be undertaken as follows:

  • Via the Spanish Consulate in Edinburgh, Manchester or London;

  • Through an appointment at your local immigration office in Spain;

  • By using a lawyer, gestor or other official representative

You will need all supporting documentation translated into Spanish.

The time to receive your NIE number can be as quick as 14 days and can be as slow as 2 months.
